Esophagoscopy
Esophagoscopy is a test intended to inspect the oesophagus, the muscular tube from the mouth into the stomach. Using a thin, lighted tube called an oesophagoscope; your doctor can observe your oesophagus and diagnose any lesions remove foreign bodies etc.
- oesophagoscopy is generally done under general anaesthesia.
- Your doctor will look at the area very carefully and take biopsies if required in cases of any tumour.
Types of esophagoscopy
The types of esophagoscopy include:
- Flexible esophagoscophy is performed by inserting a thin, flexible endoscope through the mouth and down the throat into the esophagus.
- Transnasal flexible esophagoscophy is performed by inserting a thin, flexible endoscope through the nose and down the throat into esophagus.
- Rigid esophagoscophy is performed by inserting a rigid endoscope through the mouth and down the throat into the esophagus.
